The shell of the coconut (Cocos nucifera) are surrounded by husk called coir that is processed commercially for its long. The binding dust between these fibres, called pith or peat , is compressed into cakes or bundles called coco peat or coir peat. Coco peat has qualities that make it useful as a soil amendment, potting mixes and for hydroponic growing systems.

These are extensively used in households, gardens and commercial establishments for conditioning of the soil, properly aerating it for growth of the vegetation. These bricks considerably improve the water retentive and permeability properties of the soil. It can also be employed for the preparation of ready-made and amateur compost.
